VIO & Brazilian Sugaring: The First-Timer's Complete Guide
Maris Gina
Everything you need to know before your first appointment — pain expectations, design options, what actually happens, and how to prepare for a comfortable, professional experience.
For many people, booking a VIO hair removal appointment takes more courage than they expect. There are real questions — about pain, about privacy, about what actually happens behind a treatment room door — that most salon websites don't answer honestly. This guide does. By the time you finish reading, you will know exactly what to expect, how to prepare, and why so many first-timers leave wondering why they waited so long.
What Is VIO Hair Removal?
VIO refers to the three anatomical zones of the bikini area, each designated by a letter representing its location:
You can book treatment for the full VIO, or for individual zones. The most popular combination at Maris Gina is full VIO all-off — complete removal across all three zones. Individual zone treatment is also available for clients who prefer a more gradual approach.
Why Sugaring Is the Gentlest Option for VIO
The VIO area is the most sensitive skin on the body. Hair removal here requires a method that can deliver clean results without excessive mechanical trauma to tissue that is thin, naturally moist, and close to mucous membranes. This is why sugaring consistently outperforms waxing for VIO treatment.
No heat. The sugaring paste is applied at body temperature. There is no risk of burns, even in areas where skin folds or lies flat against itself — a real hazard with hot wax.
Removal with the grain. Sugaring paste is removed in the natural direction of hair growth. Waxing pulls against the grain, which causes mechanical trauma to the follicle and surrounding tissue. In the VIO area, this difference in technique translates directly to a more comfortable experience and less post-treatment redness.
Natural ingredients only. The bikini area is in contact with underwear fabric throughout the day — any product sensitivity reaction here is particularly disruptive. Sugaring's three-ingredient formula (sugar, lemon, water) contains no resins, synthetic fragrances, or preservatives that can trigger reactions in sensitive tissue.
Re-application without skin damage. If any hairs are missed in one pass, the same area can be treated again immediately. With wax, a second pass causes significant trauma to already-stripped skin.
VIO Design Options Explained
At Maris Gina, there are no fixed templates or laminated design charts. Your technician will ask what you want before starting, and the shape is tailored to your preference. That said, most clients choose from these options:
If you are completely new to VIO hair removal, many clients begin with bikini line only or a half VIO (V and I zones only, skipping O) for their first session. This lets you experience the treatment in the less sensitive zones before committing to a full treatment. There is no pressure to do all zones at once — your technician will follow your lead completely.
What Actually Happens: A Session Walkthrough
-
1Private room check-in
Your session takes place in a fully private room. Your technician will greet you, confirm the treatment areas and design preference, and ask about any skin sensitivities or contraindications before you undress.
-
2Draping and positioning
You will be provided with disposable underwear if needed for your treatment design, and draped modestly. Your technician will guide you through positioning — typically lying down with knees bent. Only the area being treated at any given moment is uncovered.
-
3Skin preparation
The area is cleansed and lightly powdered to ensure the paste adheres to hair rather than moisture on the skin surface.
-
4Sugaring application and removal
The paste is applied against the direction of hair growth and removed with a quick flicking motion in the natural direction of growth. Your technician works in small sections, adjusting pressure and angle for different zones. Any missed hairs are re-treated immediately without additional skin trauma.
-
5Post-treatment care
A soothing aftercare product is applied to calm the skin. Your technician will explain the aftercare protocol for the specific areas treated and answer any questions you have before you leave.
Honest Pain Guide
The honest answer about VIO pain: it varies significantly between individuals, and it is almost always less than first-timers expect after reading about it. Here is what the evidence and our clients tell us:
Why the VIO area is more sensitive
The bikini zone has a higher density of nerve endings than other body areas, thinner skin, and is in closer proximity to mucous membranes. These are physiological facts — the area will always be more sensitive than legs or underarms, regardless of method.
Why sugaring is more comfortable than waxing here
Removing hair against the grain (as waxing does) causes more mechanical stress on the follicle and surrounding tissue than removing with the grain (as sugaring does). In an already-sensitive area, this difference is felt acutely. The absence of heat is also significant — hot wax in the VIO area carries a real burn risk that sugaring simply does not.
What to expect
Most clients describe the sensation as a quick pull or pressure-release rather than a sting. The V-line is less sensitive than the I and O zones. The O-line, for most first-timers, is the most surprising — often reported as significantly less painful than anticipated because the skin is thicker there than expected. Sessions become progressively more comfortable as regrowth becomes finer with each visit.
Timing tip
Skin sensitivity increases in the week before menstruation due to hormonal changes. Scheduling your appointment in the week after your period, when skin is least reactive, can make a noticeable difference — particularly for your first few sessions.
Practical Benefits of VIO Hair Removal
- 🌿Improved hygiene — less hair in the VIO zone reduces moisture retention and associated odour, particularly during menstruation and in humid climates like Tokyo's summer.
- 👙Underwear and swimwear freedom — all-off treatment means no need to plan around hair when wearing swimwear, lingerie, or summer clothing.
- ✨Smoother skin texture — the exfoliation effect of sugaring improves skin texture in the delicate zone over time.
- 🚫No more razor burn — self-shaving the VIO area with a razor is one of the most common causes of ingrown hairs, skin roughness, and irritation in this zone. Professional sugaring eliminates all of these.
- 💜Reduced skin darkening — sugaring's gentler mechanism causes less post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation than waxing or shaving, gradually improving skin tone in the area.
- 📉Progressively less regrowth — with consistent treatment, hair becomes finer and sparser, extending the smooth period between sessions.
Skin Darkening in the Bikini Area
Skin darkening (hyperpigmentation) in the bikini zone is one of the most common concerns clients raise — and one of the least often discussed openly. It is caused by repeated friction (from tight underwear and clothing), chronic skin trauma from shaving or harsh hair removal methods, and the inflammatory response that follows any skin irritation.
Sugaring addresses this on two levels. First, by replacing harsh removal methods with one that causes less mechanical trauma, the cycle of inflammation that drives darkening is reduced. Second, the mild exfoliation effect of each session gradually lifts accumulated pigmentation at the skin surface. The improvement is gradual — typically visible across three to six months of regular treatment — but it is a real and documented benefit that many clients report as one of the most appreciated long-term outcomes.
For clients with existing significant darkening, the Alexandria Professional Mud Pack applied post-treatment can accelerate improvement. Mention this concern to your technician — they can advise on the most appropriate product protocol for your skin.
Ingrown Hair Prevention for VIO
The VIO area is more prone to ingrown hairs than other body zones because the hair in this area is naturally coarser and curlier, and because the zone is subject to constant friction from clothing. The prevention protocol is the same as for other areas — but must be followed more consistently here:
Exfoliation from day 3–5 post-treatment, using a delicate zone scrub (not a standard body scrub, which can be too abrasive for this area). Twice per week, with gentle circular motions. This lifts dead cells before they can block follicle openings.
Daily moisturising with oil-free lotion keeps the skin supple and follicle openings accessible. Dry skin in this zone is the most common cause of persistent ingrown hairs.
Breathable underwear for at least 24 hours post-treatment. Avoid tight synthetic fabrics that create friction and heat in the treated zone. Cotton, loosely fitted, is ideal in the recovery period.
No shaving between sessions. This is critical for the VIO area. Shaving creates sharp-tipped regrowth that is significantly more likely to grow back into the follicle than the tapered tip produced by sugaring. If you feel you need to manage regrowth between sessions, speak to your technician about adjusting your appointment interval.
How to Prepare for Your First Appointment
Hair length: Allow 2–3mm minimum — approximately 2 weeks from shaving. Do not shave in the days before your appointment.
Cleanliness: Shower before your appointment but do not apply lotion, oil, or powder to the treatment area. Arrive clean and product-free on the skin surface.
Timing: If possible, schedule your first appointment in the week following your period when skin sensitivity is at its lowest.
Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable underwear and clothing on the day. Tight jeans or synthetic fabrics on fresh VIO skin is uncomfortable — loose cotton trousers or a skirt are ideal.
Mindset: Your technician has performed this treatment hundreds or thousands of times. They are professional, discreet, and entirely focused on making your experience as comfortable and effective as possible. Nervousness is completely normal and completely unnecessary to apologise for — they understand.
