Sugaring During Pregnancy, Periods & Teen Hair Removal
Maris Gina
Honest answers for three of the most common questions we receive — about safety during pregnancy, managing the period timing question, and when it's appropriate for younger clients to start.
Three life circumstances come up more often than almost anything else in our consultations — pregnancy, menstruation, and the question of whether a teenager is old enough to start professional hair removal. Each one deserves a clear, honest answer rather than vague reassurance or excessive caution. This guide provides exactly that.
Sugaring During Pregnancy
The short answer is yes — sugaring is considered safe throughout pregnancy. The paste contains only sugar, lemon juice, and water — all food-grade ingredients with no chemical absorption risk through the skin. There are no resins, synthetic preservatives, or pharmaceutical compounds in the formula. The treatment is topical and the ingredients do not enter the bloodstream.
That said, pregnancy brings some changes to how your skin responds to treatment, and there are a small number of practical adjustments your technician will make:
Increased skin sensitivity
Hormonal changes during pregnancy — particularly elevated progesterone and estrogen — often make the skin more reactive than usual. Many pregnant clients report that areas they previously found comfortable become more sensitive during pregnancy. This does not mean the treatment should be stopped, but your technician will work at a gentler pace and may adjust technique for more sensitive zones. Always inform the salon that you are pregnant when booking so your technician is prepared.
Positioning adjustments
From the second trimester onwards, lying flat on your back for extended periods is generally not recommended. For treatments that would normally involve lying supine (VIO, full leg), your technician will use alternative positioning — often a semi-reclined or side-lying position. This is completely workable for all body areas and should not affect your treatment outcome.
Areas to avoid during pregnancy
The abdomen should not be sugared from the second trimester onwards as the skin is stretched and more sensitive. All other body areas can generally be treated throughout pregnancy. If you have been advised by your obstetrician to avoid any particular activity or physical treatment, follow that guidance and inform your technician.
| Trimester | Treatment Status | Key Notes |
|---|---|---|
| First (weeks 1–12) | ✓ Generally safe | Skin may be more reactive. Inform your technician. All areas can be treated. |
| Second (weeks 13–27) | ~ With adjustments | Avoid treating the abdomen. Positioning adjustments required for some areas. VIO accessible with side-lying technique. |
| Third (weeks 28–40) | ~ With adjustments | Same as second trimester. Some clients find VIO and lower body treatment more difficult to position comfortably — your technician will find an approach that works. |
| Post-partum | ✓ Can resume normally | Skin sensitivity varies in the weeks after delivery. If breastfeeding, the sugaring formula presents no known risk. Resume your normal schedule when you feel comfortable. |
Why Hair Changes During & After Pregnancy
Many pregnant clients notice that body hair grows faster, thicker, or in new places during pregnancy — particularly on the abdomen, navel, and lower back. This is a normal physiological response driven by hormonal changes.
During pregnancy, elevated estrogen levels prolong the anagen (active growth) phase of the hair cycle. More follicles are simultaneously in the growth phase than usual, meaning less hair sheds and overall density appears to increase. In some clients, the elevated androgens (male hormones) during pregnancy stimulate growth in new areas — the characteristic "pregnancy hair" effect.
After delivery, estrogen drops rapidly. This triggers a mass transition of follicles from anagen to telogen (resting/shedding phase), producing the post-partum hair loss many new mothers experience — often on the scalp, but sometimes affecting body hair as well. Clients often find that body hair becomes noticeably sparser in the months after delivery. This is entirely normal and temporary.
Sugaring During Your Period
The practical answer: yes, you can have a sugaring session during your period, provided you are wearing a tampon for any treatment that includes the VIO area. Inform your technician at the start of your session — this is a completely routine situation and is handled professionally and without judgment.
Why timing matters
Skin sensitivity varies throughout the menstrual cycle. In the days before and during your period, elevated prostaglandins and fluctuating hormones increase skin reactivity. Many clients notice they experience more redness, heightened sensation, or slightly more discomfort than usual during this window — particularly for VIO treatment.
The week after your period — when estrogen is rising and progesterone is low — tends to be the most comfortable time to book. If you have the flexibility to schedule, aim for days 7–14 of your cycle for the most consistently comfortable experience, particularly for your first few sessions.
If your appointment falls during your period or you feel like your period is coming and you prefer to reschedule, please make sure to do it 24 hours before your appointment. If you choose to keep the appointment — which many clients do without difficulty — your technician will conduct the session exactly as normal.
Teen Hair Removal: A Parent's Guide
Body hair is a significant source of anxiety for many teenagers — particularly during the early years of puberty when changes are new and social awareness is high. The question of when professional hair removal is appropriate is one many parents ask, and the answer is more straightforward than some might expect.
There is no medically recommended minimum age for sugaring. The treatment is non-chemical, uses body-temperature paste, and does not penetrate the skin. Pubescent teenagers can safely undergo sugaring on any body area — the formula poses no different risk for younger skin than for adult skin.
At Maris Gina, clients under 18 require a signed parental consent form for their first appointment. Once consent is on file, a Student Pass is issued that allows the minor to book future sessions without needing the form each time. Parents are welcome to accompany their child to all or part of the session.
Common areas teens request
Underarms, lower legs, and upper lip are the most frequently requested areas for teenage clients — typically driven by self-consciousness in school settings (gym class, swimming, short sleeves). VIO treatment is also available for teens with parental consent, though it is less commonly the first area requested.
Common Teen Concerns Addressed
"Will it grow back thicker if I start too young?"
No. This is one of the most persistent myths about hair removal — and it applies to shaving, not sugaring. Shaving cuts hair at the surface, creating a blunt tip that feels coarser as it grows back. Sugaring removes hair from the root, preserving the tapered natural tip. With consistent treatment, hair actually becomes progressively finer over time, not thicker.
"Is it embarrassing to come to a salon as a teenager?"
We understand this concern completely. Maris Gina serves clients of all ages, and our technicians approach teenage appointments with the same professionalism and discretion as any other session. Teens are not treated differently or made to feel self-conscious. All sessions are in private rooms.
"When should I start?"
When you — or your child — feels ready. There is no developmental milestone or medical readiness indicator. The decision is personal, and professional sugaring is available whenever that time comes.
